General History

Bardstown is one of Kentucky's oldest towns, with many historic buildings, and it is a center for the growing of tobacco and the distilling of bourbon. Bardstown is in Nelson county, central Kentucky's Bourbon Country, 35 miles south of Louisville. Sights of interest include the local historical museum, the Getz Museum of Whiskey History--from colonial days to Prohibition--and My Old Kentucky Home State Park. This park is home to Federal Hill, a mansion that probably inspired Stephen Foster to write "My Old Kentucky Home". From June to early September the "Stephen Foster Story", a musical pageant featuring the composer's melodies, is staged in the park's amphitheater. Bourbon aficionados will want to take the tours of the nearby Jim Beam and Maker's Mark distilleries. Here also is a Trappist abbey that sells a very distinctive (and strong) cheese. Spalding Hall: Circa 1826. First served as St. Joseph College and Seminary, then as a hospital for the armies of the North and South during the Civil War, and finally as St. Joseph Preparatory School from 1911 to 1968. It is now home of the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History and the Bardstown Historical Museum. 114 North Fifth Street, Bardstown, Kentucky 40004, (502) 348-2999 The Old Pioneer Cemetery: The Old Pioneer Cemetery is located behind the Jailer's Inn. Some of Bardstown's most famous residents are buried here.
